The Apostle Paul was very serious with us about dealing with our selfishness. It is natural to look out for yourself, but other-worldly to look out for others.
Today, I went to foxnews.com and on the front page God spoke to me about how important it is to keep our selfishness in-check. A little bit of selfishness is ok, right? WRONG. If it is left un-checked, it will destroy your sense of right and wrong. I grieved as I watched this video of Angel Arce Torres, 78, as he was run-down by a hit-and-run driver, and then NOT ONE person stopped to help him.
Lord, please do whatever it takes for us to come to you. Give us back our bearings so that we will love our neighbor and love you. Help us to seek after only those things. Lord, please heal Angel Torres and bring to justice those responsible for his condition.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Police released audio Friday of two 911 calls made after 78-year-old Angel Arce Torres was struck by a car and then left in the street by passing motorists and pedestrians.
The recordings were released two days after police Chief Daryl Roberts publicized a surveillance video of a car striking Torres and leaving him paralyzed. No one in the video stepped forward to help Torres, prompting Roberts to declare, ”We no longer have a moral compass.” City officials later acknowledged that police received four 911 calls.
Comment by resa June 7, 2008 @ 4:22 pmThanks for the update on this story. It is somewhat encouraging to me to see that at least a passively helpful role was taken by two bystanders. The moral compass is definitely still in need of re-calibration…
Comment by Neil Schori June 7, 2008 @ 9:29 pmI cannot believe that not ONE person tried to either block traffic from hitting the poor man as he lay on the street or that no one attempted to hold his hand or comfort him. What in the world is the matter with people anymore? Is compassion only something to extend to ourselves or those we know? Lord I hope we have not become that selfish or cllous. Who cares who he is. He is a human being for God’s sake and deserved so much better than to be left in the middle of the street. Sickening is what that was but the saddest part is that everyone of those people who drove by, walked by or stared at Mr. Torres will have some lame excuse as to why they did nothing to excuse their behavior. I bet not one of them feels remorse. I send my prayers to the Torres family. I wish I had been there. I could never have treated another human being in that way.
